Housekeeper

Housekeepers help to make sure that hospital wards, doctors surgeries, care homes and other settings are clean, safe and attractive places for service users and staff.

There are no set entry requirements for housekeeping roles, although employers expect a good standard of English and Maths. You may also be able to apply to become an Apprentice Housekeeper or Apprentice Housekeeping Assistant.

Estate Services

Carpenter / Joiner

Carpenters and Joiners work to maintain and repair parts of buildings, working mainly with wood products both inside and outside of buildings. The role typically involves working with estate maintenance staff from other specialisms, including plumbers, decorates and electricians.

Entry Requirements:

There are no set entry requirements for carpenters, although employers expect a qualification in carpentry or joinery, such as an NVQ, certificate or diploma. Employers usually expect a good standard of English and Maths. You may also be able to apply for an Apprenticeship.

Painter and Decorator

Painters and decorators are essential to keeping hospitals and other buildings well decorated and in good repair. This role typically involves working with estate maintenance staff from other specialisms, including plumbers, electricians and carpenters.

Entry Requirements:

There are no set entry requirements for a painter and decorator role. Employers usually expect a good standard  of English and Maths as well as a qualification in painting and decorating, such as an NVQ, certificate or diploma. You may also be able to apply for an Apprenticeship.

Apprenticeships may also be available.

Window Cleaner

Window cleaners work as part of the estates team, making sure that windows are cleaned regularly.  This ensures that buildings are safe and pleasant places for service users, staff and visitors to be in.

Apprenticeships may also be available to support further qualification achievement.

Bricklayer

Bricklayers build and repair walls and other parts of buildings and are essential for keeping buildings in a state of good repair.

Entry Requirements:

There are no set entry requirements for a bricklayer role, but bricklayers usually have a recognised vocational qualification in construction. Employers usually expect a good standard of English and Maths. Apprenticeships may also be available.

Electrician

Electricians are essential to keeping buildings safe and working efficiently. Many NHS services use complex electrical equipment to treat patients, keep IT-based records and provide services such as heating and catering.

Entry Requirements:

To be fully qualified as an electrician, you need a level 3 qualification, usually an NVQ and/or a Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment. Employers may also ask for relevant experience and a good standard of English and Maths.

Apprenticeships may also be available.

Plumber

Health and Social Care services rely on water supplies, drainage and heating. They are all essential to keep hospitals and other buildings safe and working efficiently.

Entry Requirements:

There are no set entry requirements but employers expect plumbers to have a qualification and experience in plumbing and/or heating and ventilation. Employers also normally ask for a good standard of English and Maths. Apprenticeships may also be available.

Gardener

Many of our hospitals, care homes and other settings are surrounded by outside areas, making them pleasant places for staff, patients and visitors. Gardeners and grounds staff keep these grounds attractive and tidy.

Entry Requirements:

There are no set entry requirements. Employers usually expect a good standard of English and Maths as well as qualification in horticulture or landscaping, such as an NVQ, certificate or diploma. They may also expect some relevant experience. Apprenticeships may also be available.
